We're continuing to build an outstanding digital team of writers and editors at MSNBC, and we're excited to announce our latest additions, ahead of our launch later this year:

Irin Carmon joins us as a national reporter focused on women, politics and culture. Writing prominently at Jezebel and then Salon, Irin has quickly become a leading voice of her generation. This year, Forbes named her to its “30 under 30” list in media. Her keen observations and passionate views have made her a regular on MSNBC. Since she was in the building so often, we thought she might as well just move in.

Tim Noah joins us as a contributing writer focusing on politics and the economy. Tim is a former senior editor and columnist at The New Republic, a writer for Slate and is the author of the exceptional book, The Great Divergence. Political junkies recognize Tim as one of the most influential voices on American politics and economic justice. Others might know him as Adam Levine’s uncle.

Johnny Simon joins MSNBC as a photo editor, working closely with Amy Pereira. He was previously an editor at Slate Magazine and a photographer for Newsday. He has also interned with the White House Photo Office and several newspapers.

Nisha Chittal is a new social media content editor for MSNBC working with our shows on strategy and community, as part of Farra Kober's team. Nisha joins us from the Travel Channel. She has also written for The American Prospect, AlterNet.org, and Poynter on social media and technology.  

Traci Lee joins the Martin Bashir team as the show’s digital writer and producer. Traci joined the video team of MSNBC digital last year as a primetime multimedia producer and writer.

Alicia Maule joins MSNBC as a digital project manager. She was previously a project manager on President Obama’s re-election campaign in Chicago and with the inauguration committee in D.C. She also served as assistant to the chair at the School of Visual Arts’ MFA program in Design for Social Innovation.

This month, the Supreme Court will likely rule on the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8, marking a historic moment for the issue of marriage equality in the United States. 

In anticipation of these monumental decisions, +MSNBC will be hosting a series of Google+ Hangouts On Air surrounding marriage equality and the Supreme Court cases. The series of four Hangouts On Air, beginning this Monday, June 17, will unite experts, celebrities, and members of the Google+ community who will be affected by the court’s decisions in a conversation about the implications of these historic rulings.

“Hardball” is airing a new series called ‘Unkindest Cuts’ focusing on how the sequester is hurting the poor, the sick, the elderly and the young.  Chris Matthews began the series on Monday by speaking with Vinsen Faris, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Meals on Wheels and Mother Jones’ David Corn about cuts in funding to the meal plan which feeds the poor and elderly of the community. 

On Thursday, Chris talked to Joel Berg, executive director of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, and Bloomberg’s Josh Green about the continuing effects of the sequester on soup kitchens

On covering the tragedy in Newtown, CT:

When Chris was on location reporting on the horrific shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, last December, keeping a dry eye throughout the nearly weeklong broadcast was almost impossible. “You cannot interview people directly affected by such a thing and not feel the pain they are feeling. As a reporter, I have to allow that to happen so I can communicate the emotion authentically to the viewers,” Chris emphasized. “You meet family members of the victims; you meet members of the community. You cry with them. At times, it can be a challenge to find the balance of being a communicator and establishing that necessary distance.”

On covering the 2012 Olympics:

On the flip side, there are also those moments of celebratory pomp and circumstance, when inspiration surrounds you and the moments in which you find yourself leave you breathless and on the edge of unbridled excitement.

 Take the Olympics, for example. When Gabby Douglas rose to fame as the first African-American to win gold in the individual all-around event, as well as the team gold medal with the U.S. Olympics Women’s Gymnastics Team in 2012, Chris was able to share that moment with the young athlete and her family, a moment forever etched in her memory. “When I covered the Olympics, I was honored to see the best in the world, competing among the best through blood, sweat and tears, and to be there in that moment of glory, to share with the family that one single moment which becomes a life-changing event.”
