An article on The Daily Beast today profiles Rev. Al Sharpton, saying that his MSNBC show has "become a force to be reckoned with."

Today, Sharpton appears to have successfully silenced his critics in a 12-month span that’s seen his show, Politics Nation, wield tremendous influence on major news stories such as the death of Trayvon Martin and, more recently, the re-election of President Barack Obama.

“I knew the show would be successful,” Sharpton told The Daily Beast. “But I wasn’t sure how much reach it would have in terms of calling people to act. I couldn’t tell that early on.”

With a background steeped in the black church and a history filled with community activism, the man who started preaching at age four quickly proved he was uniquely qualified to offer political perspective in the age of the first African-American president.

MSNBC had its best ratings week in more than a year (since May 2, 2011 -death of Osama Bin Laden) during the week of August 13-19. For the week following Romney’s pick of Paul Ryan as his running mate, MSNBC saw year-over-year growth across the board in all day parts. "NOW with Alex Wagner" at noon ET, “PoliticsNation” with Rev. Al Sharpton at 6 p.m. ET and “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” at 10 p.m. ET had their best ratings week ever.

MSNBC will present 20 hours a day of live coverage of the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, FL and the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC.

MSNBC convention coverage will kick off daily with “Way too Early” and “Morning Joe” live from Tampa and Charlotte starting at 5:30 a.m. MSNBC’s special primetime coverage of the conventions, hosted by Rachel Maddow with Chris Matthews, will begin at 7:00 p.m. ET.

MSNBC dayside and primetime will telecast live from outdoor sets in both convention cities. MSNBC will also provide a consumer marketing experience at each convention, giving fans a chance to interact with the MSNBC brand like never before.
